In 1981, for the first time in history people canoed in the deepest canyon of the world – Colca. They were Polish!
The walls of the Colca canyon in their deepest points are 3 to 4 thousands meters high and until 1981 it was the land untouched by humans. On the floor of the canyon flows a very rapid Colca river with fragments classified as impossible to canoe. People who decided to meet the challenge and won represented Academic Canoe Tourism Club – Bystrze from Cracow. They started their expedition in 1979. As it was very pioneering, they were awarded with national Peru medals, a their record was written into The Guiness Book of Records. At present many geographic names of this region have Polish names.
